However, the downside of owning one is the accumulation of bacteria over time. Wood cutting boards are porous therefore they absorb anything and everything on its surface. It is also not advisable to put them in the dishwasher or even wash them with detergent since it will be absorbed into the cutting board.
Plastic – A Popular Alternative to Wood
On the other hand, some people may go for plastic cutting boards as they come in different colours, perfect for a colour coding system in the kitchen for different types of food. Though not as knife-friendly as wood, they are super lightweight and can be washed by hand or dishwasher. But these cutting boards get furry, have the tendency to discolour and stain after long-time usage. The cuts on the surface also become a home for bacteria to live in. You may have to get a new one every few months, so probably not the most cost-effective option.
Bamboo – An Eco-friendly Cutting Board
Did you know bamboos are considered a grass and not wood? The fact that it replenishes rapidly makes it a renewable resource therefore an environmentally conscious choice. Bamboo cutting boards are great alternatives for those of you who are into saving the environment. Some recommend to oil bamboo cutting boards regularly since they splinter often. However it is not a superb option as this layer of oil potentially traps bacteria and dirt onto the surface when you leave it overnight.
Glass – The Most Expensive Cutting Board
Glass cutting boards are probably the most expensive of all. Though aesthetically pleasing to the eye, every knife cut on it shortens the lifespan of your knives. Do get a pair of earmuffs along with the glass cutting board if you intend to because your ears will ring as the cut echos through your kitchen.
